I am a full time resident of Cannon Beach and a regular customer at our local restaurants. I am in favor of the  5% Prepared Food Tax which will be voted in our fall election.  I believe that it is a good way to spread the cost of city services to the people who benefit from them-city residents plus visitors. The Fire Dept. is seriously underfunded. Part of the Prepared Food Tax would go to them. The rest would be used by the city, whether for a new city hall/police station, city infrastructure or emergency services. The alternative is to increase property taxes. Property taxes would only apply to city property owners/renters and not to the visitors who also benefit from our city services and amenities.

I have heard the argument that the restaurant workers would see lower tips. I think that most people tip on the bottom line. I have seen people completely stiff their server and others tip 100%, it seems hard to predict tipping!

The bottom line to me is that a 5% Prepared Food tax will spread the cost of necessary services among many more people and end up saving local residents money in the end. I will be voting YES for the tax.
