I’ve been waiting for Cannon Beach’s “quiet season” to hit The Wine Shack and Provisions 124, but I haven’t seen it yet. Yes, we’ve had rainy days with only a couple of customers, but we’ve been busy getting the stores ready for summer.
We’ve finished remodeling The Wine Shack store and tasting room. Contractor Todd Rowley, from TNT Construction, did a beautiful job installing new lights which do a really nice job of highlighting the wine bottles. The bottles seem to sparkle with the new lighting focused on them. Todd also re-faced the front counter with wine barrel staves laid out in a weave pattern. I had seen this design before and I always thought it was an interesting way to use old wine barrel staves. We also had a new Wine Shack sign made for inside the store. Made by a metal shop in Austin, Texas, the new Wine Shack signs helps create a fresh, slightly industrial, feel for the store and tasting room.
The next vintage of Puffin wines are almost here! Our new 2015 Puffin rosé is bottled, labeled and ready for me to pick up. This wine has big shoes to fill as our previous Puffin Rose’ was “Best of Class” at Savor Northwest and was named a “Top Pick” by Oregon Wine Press. Puffin Pinot Gris 2015 is still in tanks, but the labels have been approved and the wine should be bottled by the end of February. We’re almost ready to release our 2013 Puffin pinot noir. I’ve submitted it to the upcoming Savor Northwest Wine Competition, held here in Cannon Beach and I can’t wait for the judges to try the wine. It’s elegant and delicious. We’ve been keeping a secret that we can finally share. The Puffin flock is expanding this spring. Puffin chardonnay 2015 will be released in early spring. We’ve been collaborating with John Derthick, the winemaker at Lujon Cellars on several Puffin wines and I’m really excited to have John make our new chardonnay. John knows what he’s doing with it come to the world’s most popular white wine as evidenced by his 2013 Lujon chardonnay, which earned 91 points and was named a “Best Buy” by Wine Enthusiast. The chardonnay is still in oak barrels and should be released by April. If you’re a chardonnay fan, you’re going to be happy.
We’ve also been working on a new Puffin wine club that we expect to debut in April. We’ve wanted to start a Puffin wine club since we bought the store and with the addition of the new chardonnay, the time is right. We’ll release more details about the Puffin wine club as we get close to its launch.
We’re also doing some work in Provisions 124 during the quiet season. We’ve added lighting to brighten up the store, added more local food products and more artisanal cheese. We’re also adding more in-store signage to help cheese lovers find the perfect wine.
With everything we’ve been working on, it clearly isn’t the quiet season.
Please drink responsibly.
