At the Library: Autumn beckons, with fall fest ahead

The Cannon Beach Library gears up for a season of fall events.

Hard to believe we’re on the verge of autumn, library friends! But as we do for all seasons, we library volunteers and friends have many plans for our library and for our little community of Cannon Beach. And by mid-September, keep in mind we will have shrunken back down to a “little” community, with the departure of our summer friends from other places!

Calling all crafters and bakers! An important event for the month of September will be our annual Fall Festival on Sept. 24. We are in need of pies, cookies, homemade breads, and cakes for the bake sale, which is an important part of the festivities. Also needed are hand-crafted items, such as hats, scarves, and other needlecrafts. As time-consuming as the production of crafts are, now is the time to get creative! New this year, there will be a gift certificate drawing, the lucky winners will receive fabulous gift certificates from our generous local merchants! Drawing tickets go on sale Sept. 1-24. Sign-up sheets for the craft items and baked goods are located in the library office, at present, and will be circulated at our first membership meeting of the season.

Speaking of the membership meeting, it will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 7. Our speaker will be Nancy Wesson, who will be telling us about her experiences in the Peace Corps. A not-to-be-missed September chance to get reacquainted and enjoy one another’s warmth and friendship — not to mention enjoying a delicious brunch together!

Another exciting annual event will be the Ferrari Club Fundraiser, which will be held on Saturday, Sept. 10. The organization has voted to donate all the proceeds from the event to our library this year, so come and admire the amazing cars and chat with club members!

Hopefully everyone has had a chance to take a look at our lovely quilt for 2016. Handcrafted by our own library quilting committee, the quilt is on display at the library behind the checkout desk and also will be brought to the Cannon Beach Farmer’s Market from 1-5 on both Tuesday, Sept. 13 and Tuesday, Sept. 20. Quilt tickets are available at $1 each or six tickets for $5. The drawing will be at our Holiday Tea in December, so there’s still time to purchase your tickets before the lucky ticket is drawn — just in time for Christmas!

Cannon Beach reads, our enthusiastic group of readers, will meet on the third Wednesday of September, Sept. 21, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The group has been reading “Falling from Horses,” by author Molly Gloss. Long-time resident Joe Hummel will be the discussion leader. There’s still plenty of time to acquire the book and read it — new members are always welcome!

Looking ahead, our first author for the popular Northwest Author Series will be coming to the library Saturday, Oct. 8, at 2p.m.

So as we library friends look forward to getting cozy in front of the fire or enjoying the emerging fall events and colors in our village, we can rest assured there are plenty of fun times ahead at the Cannon Beach Library!
