Halloween 2014 opened with gray skies, pouring rain and grim trick-or-treating prospects.

But by late afternoon, the sun was out, the puddles were gone and hoards of sweet-toothed children and their families descended upon downtown Cannon Beach, equipped with buckets and bags to stash their loot.

From business to business, they moved up and down along North Hemlock Street, extracting candy from business owners and city officials.

Batman, Red Riding Hood, the characters of “Frozen” and “Star Wars,” and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles took top prizes in trendiest costumes this year.

Also, nerds. There was an inordinately high number of nerd costumes: Thick glasses and/or suspenders kept cropping up for no earthly reason.

At sunset, the revelry died down as quickly as it began. Indoors, the children retreated to feast on their hard-earned spoils.
