Chorus performances ahead

The Cannon Beach Chorus in rehearsal.

The Cannon Beach Chorus, under the direction of Dr. John Buehler, performs Friday, May 4, at 7 p.m, at Astoria Peace Lutheran Church; on Saturday, May 5, at 7 p.m. at Nehalem Bay United Methodist Church; and Sunday, May 6, at 2:30 p.m. at Cannon Beach Community Church. The spring program, “All-American,” will feature choral works by American composers and arrangers spanning from the 1700s to the present as well as the premier performance of a 30th anniversary piece commissioned by composer, Daniel Gawthrop.

Other works on the program include “Now I Walk in Beauty,” a Navajo prayer set to music by Gregg Smith; Psalm 81 and Hail, Sacred Music, Hail, both examples of early American choral pieces. Tickets are $10 and may be purchased at the door. Students age 16 and under are admitted free when accompanied by an adult.

The 60-voice non-audition chorus is an advocate for choral music education and supports the area-wide public school choral programs and also awards a vocal scholarship each spring to graduating high school seniors wishing to continue singing at the collegiate level. Recipients of the chorus scholarship will be announced at the May concerts.
