Four elk were struck by a box truck in Cannon Beach near Highway 101 on Saturday, Nov. 26.

Two elk died on impact and one had to be put down due to extensive injuries, Police Chief Jason Schermerhorn said. The fourth elk was found dead on Monday morning.

Schermerhorn said accidents involving the herds of elk throughout town are expected. Several days before the truck accident, elk were struck by two different cars.

“Unfortunately, it happens quite a bit,” he said. “When it gets dark out, they’re very hard to see.”
