Eagle Scout project helps protect birds, marine life

Marc Ward of Sea Turtles forever leads a beach microplastics cleanup with Elias Simmons of Cannon Beach.

Volunteers are sought to participate in a microplastics event Saturday, Sept. 24. Eagle Scout candidate Elias Simmons of Cannon Beach has partnered with Marc Ward from Sea Turtles Forever to filter microplastics from the sand near and around Chapman Point in Cannon Beach. Teams will use specially designed screens to filter the sand to protect birds and marine life from consuming the debris. 

The event takes place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Volunteers meet at Les Shirley Park, Cannon Beach.
