A Christmas party featuring crafts, finger foods, refreshments, songs and, of course, Santa Claus, will be held at the Cannon Beach Chamber of Commerce from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 14.

The event, hosted by the Cannon Beach Academy’s fundraising committee, is free and open to the public, and everyone is encouraged to attend — especially those with children. Informational fliers will go up around town soon.

For the first hour, two craft stations will be conducted, one for decorating sugar cookies (baked and donated by the committee members) and another for making ornaments. All craft materials will be provided.

Then, at 2 p.m., a community sing-along with as-yet-unnamed musicians will lead the group through some classic carols and children’s songs.

Finally, the Cannon Beach Fire Department will bring Saint Nicholas himself at 2:15 p.m.

Santa used to visit the Cannon Beach Elementary School every year before it closed in June 2013. The academy is “trying to carry on the tradition in Cannon Beach,” committee member Judy Wood said. “Come and join us to celebrate the holiday season!”

The Cannon Beach Academy’s Christmas party is not a fundraiser for the burgeoning charter school.

But for supporters who want to donate to the academy sooner rather than later, the academy board has opened two accounts at Columbia Bank in Cannon Beach.

One is a restricted bank account where the funds won’t be used until the charter is approved. They will be returned if the school doesn’t open.

The other account is a general fund that the academy will use now for operating expenses while the charter continues to be developed.

The academy board believes that having these accounts will help address one of the Oregon Department of Education review committee’s major concerns — namely, that the academy does not have the money to open.

Anyone who wants to contribute to either account can go to Columbia Bank, 107 Sunset Blvd., and deposit the money; give it to an academy board member; or mail it with instructions and contact information to: Cannon Beach Academy, P.O. Box 1171, Cannon Beach, OR, 97110.
